Early Starts Are Non-Negotiable
The best wildlife viewing happens before 9am and after 4pm. Mid-day, animals rest in shade and so should you. Guests who sleep in miss the magic. Trust us: set the alarm.
The Northern Circuit vs Uganda
Tanzania's Serengeti-Ngorongoro circuit is more expensive but offers unmatched wildlife density and the Migration. Uganda's parks are less crowded, more affordable, and excellent for combining with gorilla trekking. If it's your first safari and budget allows, Tanzania. If you want gorillas + safari or want fewer tourists, Uganda.
Vehicle Matters
Insist on pop-up roof vehicles (not windows). Photography is better, viewing is better, and you can stand up. Window seats matter—book early and request specific positions. And ask how many people per vehicle. Six is standard; more than seven gets cramped.
The Kazinga Channel

When is the best time for a safari?
Dry seasons (June-September, December-February) offer the best game viewing. Animals concentrate around water sources, grass is shorter, and there's less vegetation to hide wildlife. However, wet/green seasons mean fewer tourists, dramatic skies, baby animals, and excellent birding. Each season has advantages.
How many days should I spend on safari?
Minimum 3 days to make it worthwhile, but 5-7 days is ideal. This allows multiple parks, varied ecosystems, and time for both savanna and forest experiences. Shorter safaris feel rushed. Longer safaris let you settle into the rhythm of the bush.
What are my chances of seeing the Big 5?
In Uganda: Lions (likely), leopards (possible but elusive), elephants (likely), buffalo (very likely), rhinos (only at Ziwa Sanctuary). Can children go on safari?
Yes, though many lodges have age minimums (often 6-8 years) for safety and guest experience. Game drives involve long periods of sitting quietly. How close do you get to the animals?
Often remarkably close. Lions sleeping beside the vehicle. Elephants crossing the road in front of you. But this is wild Africa—animals move freely and sightings vary. Experienced guides know territories and behaviors, dramatically improving your experience. Never guaranteed, but skilled guiding makes the difference.
Is it safe?
Yes. You're in a vehicle, and guides are trained in animal behavior. Follow instructions (don't stand up or lean out when predators are near, stay in vehicle unless told otherwise). Parks are well-managed. The biggest "danger" is usually getting too excited and hitting your head on the pop-up roof.
Uganda or Tanzania for safari?
Tanzania (Serengeti/Ngorongoro) offers the most famous safari experience with highest wildlife density and the Migration. It's more expensive. Uganda offers excellent game viewing with fewer tourists, lower costs, and the ability to combine with gorilla trekking. Both have incredible experiences—just different vibes and budgets.
What should I bring?
Neutral-colored clothing (not camouflage or white), sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, binoculars, camera with zoom lens, insect repellent. Mornings and evenings can be cold—bring layers. Most lodges provide blankets. Leave bright colors at home (they spook animals and make you stand out).
