Volcanoes National Park

This is where Dian Fossey worked and where gorilla tourism began. The permits cost $1,500 (yes, seriously), but the money funds incredible conservation. The park is smaller than Bwindi, so treks are often shorter. Infrastructure is excellent, views of the Virunga volcanoes are stunning, and you might track the same gorilla groups Fossey studied.

Nyungwe Forest National Park

East Africa's largest montane forest, untouched for millennia. Thirteen primate species including chimpanzees, a canopy walkway 50 meters above the forest floor, and some of the best birding in Africa. This is Rwanda's hidden gem—fewer tourists, stunning scenery, genuinely wild.

Akagera National Park

Rwanda's only savanna park. Lions were reintroduced in 2015, black rhinos in 2017. This is conservation in action—bringing back species that were extirpated during the genocide era. Game viewing isn't at Serengeti levels, but it's improving yearly. The landscape is stunning—rolling hills, papyrus swamps, and Lake Ihema.

Mountain Gorillas
Rwanda made gorilla tourism famous. Permits are $1,500 (compared to $800 in Uganda), but you're supporting what many consider Africa's most successful conservation program. Treks are often shorter than Uganda, infrastructure is better, and the experience is equally magical.

Golden Monkeys
Endangered, beautiful, and endemic to the Virunga Mountains. Their golden-orange fur is stunning in morning light. More playful than gorillas, they bound through bamboo forests with incredible agility. Permits are far cheaper than gorilla tracking ($100).

Chimpanzees
Nyungwe's chimpanzees are habituated but wild. They move through the canopy with incredible speed—your neck will ache from looking up. Success rate for sightings is around 60-70%, lower than Kibale but the forest setting is magnificent.

Black Rhinos
Brought back from local extinction in 2017. Akagera now has a slowly growing population. Seeing them feels significant—these are conservation success stories walking around.

Gorilla Guardians Village
Near Volcanoes National Park
Former poachers turned conservationists perform traditional dances and demonstrate how they once hunted. It sounds touristy but it's powerful—these men now earn more protecting gorillas than they did killing them. Evening performances are lively, authentic, and the backstories are fascinating.

Rwanda's coffee is exceptional. Visit women-run cooperatives to see the full process—picking, washing, sorting, roasting. The women are eager to share their stories. Buy directly from the source. Your morning cup will taste different after this.

Genocide Memorial Visits
Kigali
This isn't tourism—it's bearing witness. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is beautifully done but emotionally devastating. Budget 2-3 hours. It's important. Rwanda's remarkable recovery makes more sense after understanding what they came back from.

Africa's most celebrated conservation success story
Rwanda's mountain gorillas are conservation's greatest modern achievement. From a low of 254 individuals in 1981, the global population has grown to over 1,063 — the only great ape whose numbers are increasing. Volcanoes National Park holds roughly 30% of the world's mountain gorillas. Ten percent of every gorilla permit fee goes directly to surrounding communities for schools, health centres, and clean water. The annual Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony — in which infants born the previous year are officially named — has celebrated 438+ new gorillas since 2005, blending rigorous conservation science with deeply Rwandan cultural tradition.

June-September, December-February — Rwanda is accessible year-round. Even wet season trekking is manageable.
Visa
$50 USD e-visa (single or multiple entry) · $100 East Africa Tourist Visa (Rwanda + Uganda + Kenya) — Apply online at irembo.gov.rw. Yellow fever certificate required only if arriving from a yellow fever endemic country. Many nationalities receive free 30-day visa on arrival (African Union, Commonwealth, La Francophonie members).
Health
Required only if arriving from a yellow fever endemic country. Strongly recommended regardless — many lodges request proof of vaccination. Present throughout Rwanda year-round, including Kigali. Antimalarial prophylaxis strongly recommended (Malarone, Doxycycline, or Mefloquine). Use DEET repellent and sleep under treated nets.

Rwandan Franc (RWF) — approx. 1,400 RWF per USD — USD very widely accepted at lodges, parks, and for all gorilla permit fees. Bring crisp post-2006 USD bills. ATMs widely available in Kigali. Credit cards accepted at all major lodges.

Getting Around
4WD vehicles. Rwanda has some of Africa's best roads. Kigali to Volcanoes NP is approximately 2 hours. Kigali to Nyungwe is 4–5 hours. Kigali to Akagera is 2.5 hours. Plastic bags are illegal — they will be confiscated at the airport.
