Into the Forest with Our Closest Relatives
Chimpanzees: Wild, Loud, and Unforgettable
Chimpanzees are not gentle. They're chaotic, dramatic, and thrilling—and tracking them through the forest is pure adventure.
Chimpanzees share 98.7% of our DNA—even closer than gorillas. But where gorillas are calm and contemplative, chimps are electric. They scream, they chase each other through the canopy, they squabble and play and hoot. Watching them is like watching humanity with the volume turned up and the filter turned off.
The Search
You enter the forest as the chimps are waking. Listen: that eerie pant-hoot echoing through the trees signals males declaring territory. Your guide follows the calls. Chimps move fast—swinging through branches 30 meters up, covering ground you have to fight through on foot. This is active tracking, not a gentle walk.
The Show
When you find them, it's chaos in the best way. Juveniles wrestle. Mothers groom babies. Dominant males display, charging through the undergrowth, drumming on tree buttresses. Food calls bring the group together in a frenzy. It's loud, dynamic, and completely captivating.
The Difference
Gorilla trekking is profound and emotional. Chimpanzee tracking is exhilarating and fun. Gorillas sit. Chimps perform. Both are incredible—just different energies. We recommend doing both if your schedule allows.

From Our Guides
Years of experience distilled into practical wisdom
Kibale is Your Best Bet
If seeing chimps is a priority, book Kibale. It has the highest density of chimps in Africa and the best success rates. Kyambura Gorge is beautiful but success rates are lower (60-70%) because the gorge's small population moves freely in and out.
Consider the Habituation Experience
The standard trek gives you one hour with chimps. The habituation experience (Uganda only) means spending the full day with researchers as they follow and study a less-habituated group. You see nest building, morning activities, feeding, and social dynamics most tourists miss. It's more expensive but extraordinary.
Combine with Bigodi Wetlands
After morning chimp tracking in Kibale, visit Bigodi Wetlands (20 minutes away). This community-run wetland sanctuary has incredible birding, other primates, and a chance to see the rare Sitatunga antelope. Plus, your fee supports local families.
They Move Fast
Unlike gorillas, which often sit and eat, chimps are constantly moving. Be ready for moderate scrambling through forest undergrowth to keep up. They might be on the ground one minute and 30 meters up in the canopy the next. It's energetic and thrilling.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between chimpanzee tracking and the habituation experience?
Standard tracking is a half-day experience (2-6 hours) where you spend one hour with habituated chimps once found. The habituation experience is a full day with researchers following a less-habituated group from morning nest building to evening nesting. You see behaviors and activities not visible in the standard hour. It's only available in Kibale, Uganda, costs more, but offers unparalleled insight.
Is chimp tracking easier than gorilla trekking?
Generally yes. Chimps in Kibale are usually found within 30 minutes to 2 hours on relatively moderate terrain. Gorilla trekking can involve 6+ hours of steep, muddy hiking. However, chimps move faster and through denser forest, so there's still scrambling involved. Neither is a casual walk.
What's the success rate for seeing chimpanzees?
In Kibale (Uganda), success rates exceed 95%. Kyambura Gorge has lower rates (60-70%) due to smaller population. Nyungwe (Rwanda) averages 60-70%. Mahale and Gombe (Tanzania) have excellent rates but require expensive fly-in logistics.
Can we do both gorillas and chimps on one safari?
Absolutely, and we highly recommend it. Many Uganda itineraries combine Bwindi (gorillas) with Kibale (chimps) and Queen Elizabeth NP (classic safari). It's the ultimate primate and wildlife combination. Rwanda itineraries can combine Volcanoes NP (gorillas) with Nyungwe (chimps).
How close can we get to the chimps?
The rule is 8 meters (about 25 feet), though chimps sometimes approach closer. Unlike gorillas, chimps often stay high in the canopy, so binoculars are useful. When they're on the ground feeding or grooming, you can have excellent close-range viewing and photography.
What's the minimum age for chimp tracking?
12 years old for standard tracking, 15 for habituation experience. This is younger than gorilla trekking (15) because chimps are less susceptible to human diseases and treks are generally less strenuous.
When is the best time to track chimpanzees?
Year-round tracking is possible. Dry seasons (June-September, December-February) mean easier walking conditions and chimps spend more time on the ground. Wet seasons (March-May, October-November) mean lush forest and fewer tourists, but muddier trails and chimps sometimes stay high in trees feeding on fruit.
